Eduardo Gageiro: evidence of a future that has already smiled on us

A note of condolence on the passing of Eduardo Gageiro, who died yesterday, 4 June, at the age of 90. He leaves us an invaluable legacy in Portuguese photography, having documented the country's political, social and cultural transformations with sensitivity and depth over seven decades.

Gageiro was one of the first photojournalists to arrive and photograph 25 April 1974, capturing the unique and emblematic images of our Revolution, evidence of a future that has already smiled on us, as shown in his image of a mother holding up her fist with a baby on her shoulder, published in the collective work ‘Lisboa 25 de Abril de 1974: breve roteiro fotográfico’, by Alfredo Cunha, Gageiro and José Antunes. He began working as a photojournalist in 1957 for Diário Ilustrado (1956), and from then on he dedicated his entire life to photojournalism.  He was a contributor to the main Portuguese and foreign publications and to the Presidency of the Republic. His work has been reproduced all over the world and he has won more than 300 awards. During the Munich Olympic Games in 1972, Eduardo Gageiro was also the first photographer to capture the first images that went around the world.
