The first free presidential elections after the adoption of the 1976 Constitution took place on 27 June of that year.
António Ramalho Eanes was elected in the first round with 61.59% of the votes; Otelo Saraiva de Carvalho obtained 26.46% of the votes; Pinheiro de Azevedo 14.37% and Octávio Pato 7.59%. The President of the Republic was sworn in at the Assembly of the Republic on 14 July 1976.
