April or One Carnation at a Time: freedom on the streets, freedom in the law

On the 52nd anniversary of the 25 April Revolution, marking the final year of its 50th-anniversary celebrations, the 25 April Documentation Centre at the University of Coimbra is also celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Constitution of the Portuguese Republic by  promoting the sharing of scientific and cultural content, aimed at enhancing, expanding and disseminating its documentary and photographic collections.

The initiative will be presented in digital format, with online publication via the Centre’s website, from 24 April 2026.

Two previously unpublished photographic archives by Gérald Gigon and Lieve Meersschaert will be released, offering new perspectives on historical contexts linked to the 25 April 1974 Revolution, the processes of democratic transition and the social dynamics of the period.

A virtual exhibition dedicated to the constitutional process and the adoption of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic will be presented. This exhibition aims to highlight the key moments, debates and key figures of this process, based on archival documents and historical background notes, promoting its dissemination among researchers, students and the general public.
